"From Snow White to Shrek, from Fred Flintstone to SpongeBob SquarePants, the design of a character conveys personality before a single word of dialogue is spoken. Designing Characters with Personality shows artists how to create a distinctive character, then place that character in context within a script, establish hierarchy, and maximize the impact of pose and expression. Practical exercises help readers put everything together to make their new characters sparkle. Lessons from the author, who designed the dragon Mushu (voiced by Eddie Murphy) in Disney's Mulan-plus big-name experts in film, TV, video games, and graphic novels-make a complex subject accessible to every artist." The English language edition of this bestselling album series. This English language text by C.B. Cebulski is better than the first English language translation published by Heavy Metal. This Marvel edition reproduces the pages 8-inches high, as opposed to 12-inches high in the original French.

From the publisher: "The internationally acclaimed best-seller is now finally presented in English! Meet Noa, a so-called Sky Doll; a life-like female android without rights, who exists only to serve the State's needs and desires. But when Noa meets two so-called "missionaries" who aid in her escape from her tyrannical master, all hell breaks loose for our cyborg siren as she uncovers clues that she may be much more than just a robotic toy. The first release in a new partnership between Marvel and cutting-edge French publisher Soleil! Collects Sky Doll #1-3."

Alessandro Barbucci & Barbara Canepa. SKY DOLL 3 MATITE (2B ITALIAN). [SN26568X] $50

Torino: Pavesio, 2005. 1st. 4to (11-13"), 108pp, b&w, hardcover pictorial boards. VF.

Literally, "Sky Doll Pencils." We carried the French limited edition until it sold out and we are pleased to have located some copies of the nearly identical Italian limited edition.

It reproduces the third and final Sky Dolls volume (with an alternate ending) in its pencil form: the left-hand pages reproduce the artist's loose pencil sketches and the right-hand pages reproduce the finished pencil pages. The final ten pages of this version of Sky Doll 3 concludes the story arc rather than the final version’s "to be continued." A more satisfying ending, if I say so myself. Text in Italian.

Fine in NF slipcase. #214 of 1875 signed copies.

While well-heeled collectors can buy the original paintings (I witnessed a Scrooge McDuck money bin painting sell at auction for over $250,000!), this book is the only repository for the vast majority of Barks' duck paintings.

This massive volume includes all 122 of Barks’ 1971-1976 Disney oil paintings; reproduces 12 oils as giant 12”x 16” foldouts; annotates his paintings, examines his life, and studies his comic book work in 30,000 words of accompanying text; publishes a previously unpublished ten-page story (Donald Duck in "Silent Night."); and reproduces photographs of “the good duck artist” at home and at work.

About This Edition:
"This book of Carl Barks' paintings is the brainchild of two collectors who had been familiar with the Barks stories since childhood. Both Russ Cochran and Bruce Hamilton had been Barks fans since the early 1940s when his stories started to appear in Walt Disney's Comics and Stories each month.
"When the phenomenon of the Barks oil paintings started happening in the early 1970s, both Russ and Bruce were closely involved with not only the sale of the paintings to collectors, but also with suggesting concepts or ideas to Barks for future paintings. In the process, they became dose friends with Carl and Gare Barks and visited them in their home many times.
"The idea of publishing a book such as this, which contains all of Carl Barks' 122 Disney paintings, had been discussed at countless dinners and while driving around the country on collector-related business. When permission from Walt Disney Productions finally came for this edition, the thinking processes had been going on for so long the job was already half done. All that remained was to collet, from people Russ and Bruce knew all across the country, the professionally-made photographs from which the plates in this book were made.
"Every effort was made to insure the best quality reproduction and most of the final cromalin proofs were approved by Carl Barks himself. The color separations were color-corrected and adjusted until everyone was fully satisfied with the results. No time or expense was spared. The foldouts were arranged to be fully-sewn and not merely tipped into the binding; the cover stock was chosen to last several lifetimes of use and appreciation.
"Regardless of whatever future publication of Barks oils there might be, this special, limited and signed McDuck Edition will be the only complete and comprehensive assemblage of these very special paintings. It is an edition prepared especially for collectors by collectors.
"The 122 paintings themselves, of course, are the ultimate in collectors items for the Barks enthusiast. This edition is expected to be the "bible" for collectors who own (or seek to own) one or more of these paintings."

The first and most important of 19th century France's animalier sculptors. 189 color illustrations. Prestel: "Antoine-Louis Barye's animal sculptures are celebrated as much for their technical brilliance and painstaking detail as for their uncanny resemblance to their subjects. Principally known as an animal sculptor, he was also a consummate modeler of the human form. This volume gathers Barye's works from the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore, whose collection of the artist's work is second only to that of the Louvre. In addition to the artist's magnificent and anatomically accurate sculptures, the book also features his often-overlooked paintings and drawings. A critical examination of his techniques draws on recent conservation work, and thoughtful assessments of the critical debates surrounding his work provide new insights for scholars and enthusiasts of nineteenth century sculpture."

In doing so, he sold magazines and books to a drama-craving audience, and propelled publishing's mass markets, thus infiltrating American minds with the trends and fashions of pop culture. His remarkable versatility as an artist can be seen in the range of his published work in pulp magazines, his exciting paintings appearing on the covers of Thrilling Mystery, Wings, and War Birds, as well as The Phantom Detective, Mystery Book, Argosy, and Western Round-Up."

Cecilia Beaux. CECILIA BEAUX: AMERICAN FIGURE PAINTER. [SN28957] $50

Berkeley: University of California Press, 2007. 1st. 4to (11-13"), 195pp, 202 color and b&w illustrations, hardcover cloth. Fine/Fine.

"At the turn of the twentieth century, the celebrated American artist William Merritt Chase named Cecilia Beaux 'not only the greatest living woman painter, but the best that has ever lived.' While Beaux - unlike her contemporaries John Singer Sargent and Mary Cassatt - has not fared well in modernist-driven art history, her work has become the subject of renewed interest on the part of art historians, collectors, and general viewers on both sides of the Atlantic, and her forty-year career represents a compelling and under-examined chapter in the history of American art. Cecilia Beaux: American Figure Painter is the most comprehensive appraisal of Beaux's talent in more than three decades. This handsomely illustrated book presents a range of the artist's strongest work and offers a fresh understanding of her career by examining critical questions of gender, class, and the importance of place. It features substantive essays which examine Beaux's participation in the international portrait market of the 1890s, explore the artist's professional identity and changing fortunes through a close reading of key images, investigate Beaux's sensitivity to the framing and display of her work. An illustrated chronology of Beaux's life and work, compiled by Alison Bechtel Wexler, completes the study."

Until, that is, an old blind man forces Krag, alone that day, to call for reinforcements to stop him entering. Because he has not carried out his duty, Krag is condemned to be executed in the middle of the desert by his own brother. The Monsters series is offering a new and explosive collaboration by the Sfar/Trondheim team, in top form, and matchless graphics from Frederic Bezian - Well and truly a great success!" A homosexual tragedy set in Roman times. Scenes of the Roman Senate, assassinations, Roman soldiers in battle, slaves, etc.

From Indyworld.com: "The lush, deft, inky drawings of French cartoonist Blutch have been a significant influence on the current generation of serious American cartoonists, primarily thanks to the mostly wordless series Mitchum. Blutch himself has been a bit of a schizophrenic artist, working in the "mainstream" for humor magazines like Fluide Glacial while also creating a body of complex and challenging "high art" comics, as well as paintings that have been exhibited in galleries internationally.

Péplum is, to date, his long-form comics masterpiece: inspired by the Roman satirist Petronius's Satyricon, this tale is a strange quest narrative that also explores the nature of obsession and the traps and snares of politics. Péplum is a minor epic, told in a virtuoso fashion by a master draughtsman who has a near-perfect intuition for comics flow and timing. Rarely have such perfectly-constructed comic pages seemed so effortless, matching the perfect line with the serendipitous smudge."

The next day, Lola and Renee will deal with an absent father, who appears regularly but unexpectedly, a lovesick, monomaniacal psychopath, Omar Sharif and a huge spider...all amid a general power failure, a very challenging dance program, and a flood.

"All are on board a strange journey, half dream, half-fantasy, through eerily deserted streets of the city. In our modern world where everything goes too fast, twenty-four hours are sometimes enough to tip a life."

Frank Brangwyn. Rutter, Frank. THE BRITISH EMPIRE PANELS DESIGNED FOR THE HOUSE OF LORDS BY FRANK BRANGWYN, R.A. [SN28257] $200

Essex: F. Lewis, 1933. 1st. 4to (11-13"), 148pp, 22 color and 30 b&w plates, hardcover cloth. NF (very bright, clean). Limited to 1000 copies.

This beautiful monograph is devoted to Brangwyn's most famous mural commission begun in 1925 and completed in 1932 ("The huge British Empire Panels are amongst the most important examples of his decorative work on a large scale."). "Brangwyn's intention was to enliven the gloomy Royal Gallery with 'decorative painting representing various Dominions and parts of the British Empire'. No geographical logic was intended; the panels have a spirit of fantasy showing a protected world of beauty and plenty, based artistically on Brangwyn's many travels and also his studies of animals in London Zoo." Controversy caused the panels not to be hung in the Royal Gallery in the House of Lords ("the scheme was thought to be too colourful and lively") and the panels were eventually hung in a specially built hall in Swansea.

"The contents of this book are reproductions of drawings, sketches and completed panels by Frank Brangwyn." The book reproduces artwork for three different schemes for the gallery: the first depicting WWI subjects, and the second heraldic (both abandoned); and a third "the beauty of Greater Britain" ("this wealth of material resources, this luxuriant beauty of fruit and flowers, forest, and animal life..."). This book contains all 18 completed panels in color and four exemplary color cartoons (preliminary drawings) are also reproduced in color.

Emile Bravo. Regnaud, Jean. MY MOMMY. [SN26878X] $25

Rasquera, Spain: Ponent Mon/Fanfare, 2009. 1st thus. Small 4to (9-11"), 120pp, color illustrations, hardcover pictorial boards. Fine.

This French album was a 2008 Essentials Award winner at Angoulême and won a 2008 Tam Tam Literary Award. It is a beautifully heartfelt and beautifully illustrated story.

"Jean, an adorable 5 year old boy, relates his daily life and little adventures with his sour-tempered teacher Madame Moinot, his busy dad, his nanny Yvette (the Queen of iced chocolate), his little brother Paul (with whom he keeps fighting) and his neighbor Michèle (whose parents own a kennel) ...all the small and funny things that seem to make him an ordinary boy. But Jean feels a great emptiness inside. With sensitivity and emotion, but never lapsing into melodrama, Bravo and Regnaud tell their story and remind us that children are not the only ones who would rather invent than deal with reality."

Manuel Alvarez Bravo. IN FOCUS: MANUEL ALVAREZ BRAVO: PHOTOGRAPHS FROM THE J. PAUL GETTY MUSEUM. [SN28034] $15

Los Angeles: J. Paul Getty Museum, 2001. 1st. Small 8vo (7.5-8"), 144pp, b&w, softcover French wraps. VF.

"The career of Manuel Alvarez Bravo (b. 1902) spans many decades and reflects numerous changes in artistic fashion. A self-taught photographer, he purchased his first camera at the age of twenty, and around 1925 he won first prize in a photographic competition in Oaxaca. He returned to his birthplace of Mexico City and in 1927 met Tina Modotti, who introduced him to many Modernists in the city's lively art scene. Among them was Edward Weston, who encouraged Alvarez Bravo to continue his photography. Though his work went unrecognized in mainstream art circles for years, Alvarez Bravo is now considered by many to be one of Mexico's great artists.

"The Getty Museum's collection of photographs includes more than ninety by Alvarez Bravo, and approximately fifty are reproduced here with commentary on each image by Roberto Tejada, an independent curator and critic, who also provides an introduction to the book and a chronological overview of the artist's life. The photographs reproduced display the array of styles, themes, and moods that typify art created in Mexico during the 1930s as modernism first flowered in that country; they also include examples of his work from later decades.

"In Focus: Manuel Alvarez Bravo is published to coincide with an exhibition of his photographs at the Getty Museum from November 13, 2001 through February 17, 2002, commemorating the artist's 100th birthday on February 4th. This book also includes an edited transcript of a colloquium on Alvarez Bravo's career with participants David Featherstone, independent editor and curator; Colette Alvarez Urbajtel, the photographer's wife and herself a practicing photographer; Pablo Ortiz Monasterio, photographer and independent curator; Charles Merewether, collections curator at the Getty Research Institute; Cristina Cuevas-Wolf, independent scholar; Weston Naef, curator of photographs at the Getty Museum; Susan Kismaric, curator of photographs at the Museum of Modern Art, and Roberto Tejada."
