Benares, in 1832, the Alexander Martin investigation around the disappearance of Ayesha, the adopted daughter of Lord Bullock, is making great strides. Alexander regains hope after spotting her in a crowd. Lord Bullock, less patient, uses the hard way to make a Thug informant talk. The Thug sect seems to be the perfect scapegoat for Westerners ... Alexander's rationality and his rejection of conventional wisdom in this society governed by ancestral codes will be severely tested.
