Three volumes reproducing the best work of the artists who have painted or drawn the creations of Edgar Rice Burroughs. All reproduced from the original art. The best reproduction of these artworks ever. A legendary publication by Russ Cochran who also produced the Complete EC Library sets.
Vol. 1 (1976) 272 pages: John Allen St. John.
Vol. 2 (1977) 306 pages: Harold Foster, John Coleman Burroughs, Studley Burroughs, Morris Gollub, others.
Vol. 3 (1984) 248 pages: Frank Frazetta, Burne Hogarth, Roy Krenkel, Reed Crandall, Russ Manning, Frank Schoonover, others.
The set was pre-sold to subscribers and each volume was published individually (the slipcase was shipped with the third and final volume). The set was limited to 2000 copies and each volume was numbered--subscribers received matching numbers. However due to numerous delays producing the final volume (mostly related to licensing the Frazetta artwork which was the centerpiece of that volume), Cochran allowed subscribers to opt out of the final volume, resulting in many loose volumes or unmatched sets.
This is a complete set--three volumes in slipcase--however the numbers on these volumes do not match (Vol. 1 is #381, Vol. 2 is #863, and Vol. 3 is #1992).
Volume 1 is devoted to the first ERB illustrator: J. Allen St. John. Every illustration in the book is full-page or foldout. There are 25 full-page color plates, four foldout color plates, and 95 full-page black & white illustrations. Plus two full-page photographs of St. John. In addition to the St. John artwork are Edgar Rice Burroughs paintings by N.C. Wyeth and Frank Schoonover. Written & edited by Edgar Rice Burroughs & J. Allen St. John scholar Darrell C. Richardson.
Volume 2 is devoted to ERB illustrators Harold Foster, John Coleman Burroughs, Studley Burroughs, Morris Gollub, others.
Volume 3 features the modern era of ERB illustrators with a focus on the illustrated Canaveral Press editions: Frank Frazetta (65 pages, 16 full-page color paintings, 24 b&w illustrations, eight photos & a long interview), Burne Hogarth (50 pages), Roy Krenkel (28 pages, 13 full-page color paintings, 29 b&w illustrations & an interview), Reed Crandall (28 pages, 26 b&w illustrations), Russ Manning (26 pages), Frank Schoonover (six pages, three full-page color paintings), others. This final volume was ten years in the making.
