Description

From the Introduction by Allen Staley:

In the 1870s, Abbey was an illustrator, not a painter, and as this exhibition demonstrates he remained an illustrator - a wonderful illustrator - although he did become a successful painter as well. He traveled to England initially for the sake of subject matter for illustrations for Harper's Monthly, and English literature and English culture more generally continued to provide his chief subject matter throughout his career.
