From the publisher:

Utagawa Hiroshige is undoubtedly, with Hokusai, one of the most recognized Japanese artists in the art of printmaking. Born in 1797, he ceaselessly drew the nature and landscapes of Japan before its transformation under the Meiji era.

In 1832, after making his first trip on the Tôkaidô road (an illustrious road connecting the shogun capital, Edo, and the imperial capital, Kyoto) he made his most famous series of prints, the 53 Tôkaidô Stations (1833-1834). He presented the landscapes and the major places along the way integrating scenes of daily life.

Inspired by this undisputed master of printmaking, Shigeru Mizuki decides to pay tribute to Hiroshige by producing his own series of illustrations, The Fifty-three Relays of Yôkaidô. The mangaka will take two years (2001-2003) to redraw the original landscapes of Hiroshige. He maliciously integrates his personal universe, populated by yokai and his own characters, Kitaro repelling him.

A true fusion of the classical tradition of ukiyo-e (an artistic print movement in the time of Edo) and Japanese folklore, this book poses the illustrations of the two masters side by side and offers the reader an unprecedented fantastic journey.
