I fell in love with this graphic novel the minute I saw it at Angouleme. Alva in the Dark is an impressive, fast-paced thriller by two Scandinavian filmmakers now creating comics. The story combines crime, mystery, thriller, horror, folklore, and the supernatural. The black & white artwork is loose and free and expressive.

Writer Aksel Studsgarth has spent most of his working life in the animation and VFX industry. Artist Daniel Hansen has worked as an illustrator, previsualist, and art director on animation projects around the world, including Dreamworks' Penguins of Madagascar and Home.

The word balloons and the whole album are easily translated using the Google Translate app and the camera on your phone or device.

We are in the dead of winter. Alva, an orphan, lives on the margins of society. She survives in the drab suburbs of a Scandinavian city as a burglar, thanks to her exceptional skills at climbing up buildings. During a heist with her two associates, Morten and Mini, stealing gold coins from an old man's apartment, she inadvertently frees Sidsel, a 7-foot-tall witch who has the ability to spit gold nuggets. Sidsel brutally kills Morten and the old man, while Mini narrowly escapes.

Alva climbs to the roof where Sidsel is waiting for her. The witch senses that Alva shares a kinship with an ancient tribe, the Cloud People.
