This Special Edition issue is devoted to the feminist French comics magazine Ah!Nana.
For the comic book historian or women's studies major, this is a very handy one volume overview and history.
From the publisher:
Ah!Nana was the first French comic strip periodical produced by women, for women between 1976 and 1978.
Coming from the teeming galaxy of Métal Hurlant, it represented a pioneering adventure in the world of French comics. Its content freely reflected a great deal of the feminist concerns of the time, tackling the most delicate subjects of the 1970s as well as the most taboo: not just art, and fashion, but also incest, female sexuality, violence suffered by women, Nazism, transsexuality. The latter earned it a ban on sales to minors, a form of censorship prohibiting it from accessing newsstands and synonymous with condemnation.
So, Ah!Nana paved the way for a new generation of avant-garde feminists, broke stereotypes, shook up conventions, and gave a free space to renowned authors: Chantal Montellier, Florence Cestac, Nicole Claveloux, Trina Robbins, Paula Jacques and Agnès Varda.
This exceptional special issue of Métal Hurlant dedicated to Ah!Nana is a vibrant tribute to these pioneers.
