The third comic book released by the Air Pirates Collective (Gary Hallgren, Dan O’Neill, Bobby London, Shary Flenniken, Ted Richards).

After the Air Pirates received an injunction barring them from publishing Air Pirates Funnies #3, they would publish some of the material planned for issue #3 in their third comic book release, The Tortoise and the Hare.

This is the one and only issue.

Contents:

  • The Tortoise and the Hare Episode #1 and 2 by Gary Hallgren
  • A three-page strip by Dan O’Neill (reprinted from The Realist)
  • The Early Adventures of Roger Rabbit [no relation]
  • 3 Dirty Duck strips by Bobby London
  • 2 Trots and Bonnie strips by Shary Flenniken
  • Ezekiel Wolf by Ted Richards

The colophon states: "Episode #1, The Tortoise and the Hare, is reprinted from Air Pirates #2, which is now banned in Boston, Berkeley, and the rest of continental Disneyland. As of December 1971, Air Pirates #3 will not be allowed either... so here’s the story."

This is a new, uncirculated copy, graded Very Fine in book grading equal to NM-Mint in comic book grading.

The Air Pirates Collective was made up of Gary Hallgren, Dan O’Neill, Shary Flenniken, Bobby London, & Ted Richards (the "Coconuts").

In 1971, they took on that bastion of the Establishment, the venerable Walt Disney Company. The artists argued that parody and fair-use permitted them to use iconic Disney characters in their very un-Disney comic book. The Company was not amused, especially objecting to Dan O’Neill’s Mickey Mouse story in which Mickey has sex with Minnie. Disney’s successful eight-year legal offensive destroyed the Pirates and helped to seal The Mouse in eternal copyright.
