A mixture of reportage and caricature by Searle of the city he loved. Out of print.

From the back cover:

Ronald Searle has lived in France for over a quarter of a century...in the early seventies, he produced the series of incisive, witty drawings which are gathered together in Ah Yes, I Remember It Well...

Searle's Paris is not the pretty city, nor the smart metropolis of the boulevards, but the somewhat murky city of cobble stoned back streets, boucheries chevalines, frozen-fingered flower sellers., grubby local cafes, and paralytic clochards -- the living cry of the people. All the familiar Parisian types are here: the sullen waiter, the suspicious concierge, the vociferous demonstrator, the snarling policeman, the insouciant lovers, the talentless 'Bohemian' artists, the glum tourists...They are all caught unerringly by Searle's laconic pen against the backdrop of Paris in its most vibrant post-war period, when the crumbling city was being given a thorough wash and brush-up, already outdated 'modern buildings were sprouting all over the place, tourists were invading on a scale never seen before, and students were in bloody and government-shaking revolt. Yet the most characteristic elements are as timeless as the smells -- of warm baguettes, coffee, Gauloises, and drains. Ah yes...

Ronald Searle is one of the world's most understand satirical artists. His drawings have appeared in many leading magazines in Europe and the USA, and he has produced over fifty books, including Golden Oldies, and The Compleet Molesworth in collaboration with Geoffrey Willans. He was the first living foreign artist to be given a one-man show at the prestigious Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris.
