The only book on this illustrator and record album cover artist.
All the text is in both English and Japanese.
A very sharp copy of a hard to find title.
From the dustjacket:
David Stone Martin is both the pioneer and the continuing style force of the pictorial design cover for gramophone records. From the start of the boxed 78 record sets and continuing into the LP, the David Stone Martin (more simply known as DSM) style was the pace setter. A force that other illustrators found increasingly difficult to be independent of.
DSM's pictorial covers for records started from the mid 1940's with the Asch, Disc and Stinson labels. And continued through the 1950's for the Clef, Norgran and Verve labels. As also for other record labels such as Dial, Grand Award, Progressive. The original Erst issues of these records are now Collector's items extremely hard to find.
JAZZ GRAPHICS--DAVID STONE MARTIN will present for the first time in print about 150 of the original first issue DSM covers. Many were never reissued. And some reissues have modified both designs and colors. These include explanations based on detailed interviews with DSM and the author's own research clarifying design aspects which have so far defied immediate understanding.
Through the 80's a private collector commissioned DSM for a continuing series of Portraits of individual musicians. About 65 of these unique drawings are included in GRAPHICS. In print for the first time. The unique DSM style captures the individual spirit, the stance, the mannerisms of the great musicians many of whom were close friends of DSM.
Also included is a note on DSM's career as a iIllustrator. And other rare DSM material to round out JAZZ GRAPHICS--DAVID STONE MARTIN.
