From the publisher:

Gustav Vigeland (1869-1943) is most famous for the Vigeland Part in Oslo. His design and execution of the part, from idea to reality, is the result of unparalleled daring patient-- and timing. The sculpture park is the world's largest made by one single artist, and one of Norway's most popular tourist attractions.

However, it was with his portraits, monuments and small sculpture groups that Vigeland first made made a name for himself as Norway's foremost sculptor, in the early twentieth century. It was all these works that gained him international recognition. Parallels: Gustav Vigeland and his Contemporaries focuses on this -- for many unfamiliar aspect of Vigeland's oeuvre. It also sheds light on the sculptor's international associations. For the first time Vigeland is presented together with some of the most central artists of his age, all pioneers in the development of modern sculpture: Constantin Meunier (1831 - 1905), Auguste Rodin (1840 - 1917), Antoine Bourdelle (1861 - 1929) and Aristide Maillol (1861 - 1944).

This publication accompanies the celebration of the 150th anniversary of Gustav Vigeland's birth.
