Gustaf Tenggren (1896 – 1970) began his career illustrating children's books in a classical style, first in Scandinavia, and then in the USA. He was then hired by Walt Disney in 1936 to work on Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and continued at Walt Disney Productions on Pinocchio and Bambi until 1939. From 1942 to 1962, Tenggren worked in a brand new style for Little Golden Books with illustrations for children's books such as Saggy Baggy Elephant, Tawny Scrawny Lion, The Shy Little Kitten, Little Black Sambo, and The Poky Little Puppy, which became the single all-time best-selling hardcover children's book in English
