The first two Pogo paperbacks from Simon & Schuster were hits, with many reprints and selling over a half million copies. For the third, Walt decided to prepare all new material. The theme is bedtime stories supposedly told by Pogo to a group of young animals, and of course the characters are often the familiar ones from the Pogo newspaper strip playing the parts.

After a one-page intro there are five stories that begin with a version of Robin Hood, continue with nonsense verse, and then veer suddenly to a parody of a Mickey Spillane murder mystery with Albert as the main character. This was my favorite of the book, Albert makes a wonderfully clueless detective along the lines of Peter Sellers' Inspector Clouseau, but even funnier. Next there's a version of the Chicken Little story where many Pogo characters get names like Turtle-Lurtle and Owl-Jowly, which is pretty funny. Next there's an odd text story about a lazy layabout couple living in the woods and their dog, no Pogo characters, a few spot illustrations, and a grim ending. Nothing funny about it. Finally there's a version of the Brothers Grimm story The Traveling Musicians which has some amusing moments. Mostly an entertaining book with wonderful art, though I imagine it would have confused young readers. But then, the content of Pogo was often geared more at adults, while everyone could enjoy the art.
