The Artist Within was first conceived when photographer Greg Preston's love of illustration & fantasy art and a suggestion from cartoonist Scott Shaw (!) fermented into Preston's project of photographing artists within their studios.[1] The 15-year-long project brought together over 200 influential cartoonists, comic book artists, animators, and other fantasy illustrators into hard-bound book collection of black and white portraits of artists in their studios. Some of those featured include: Will Eisner, Carl Barks, Frank Miller, Al Hirschfeld, Chuck Jones, Joseph Barbera, Jack Kirby, Joe Simon, Moebius, Cathy Guisewite, Berke Breathed, R. Crumb, the Hernandez brothers, Alex Ross, Todd McFarlane, Walt and Louise Simonson, among many more.

From the publisher:

The culmination of more than fifteen years of photography by renowned photographer Greg Preston, this book is a living history of the men and women who have shaped the imaginations of countless millions of people around the world through their work in the fields of animated cartoons, comic books, comic strips, and editorial cartooning. The list of artists includes such luminaries as Frank Miller, Al Hirschfeld, Joe Barbera, Jack Kirby, Joe Simon, Moebius, Walter and Louise Simonson, and many more, all in photographs exclusive and shot expressly for this book.

Presenting a unique glimpse into the creative mind through never-before-allowed access to the artists' studios, many of these pictures have never been published before, and capture several creators who have passed away, making this book an invaluable resource and window into the history of comics.
