From the publisher:
Charles Burns has never hidden his interest in old romance comics and adolescent impulses. In Sweet Dreams, the author of Final cut offers us a condensed version of his favorite themes through fifty illustrations. This series of drawings is inspired by a recurring and omnipresent motif in romantic comics from the 1950s and 1960s: the image of a young woman in bed, tormented by the pains of love. Burns revisits this kitsch aesthetic by incorporating it into his own universe. Dreams then become the realm of all passions. Once sweet and idyllic, they now harbor fears, anxieties, and fantasies.
In Sweet Dreams, Charles Burns playfully explores the male gaze that shaped the collective imagination for so long, to better question the representation of women in American comics. The sweetened image of the innocent young girl gives way to darker inner turmoil, restoring a surrealist dimension to the unconscious. Between homage and subversion, this series of illustrations plunges us into unsettling dreams that exert their full power of fascination.
This book includes illustrations published in two risograph zines, self-published by Charles Burns, as well as some previously unseen illustrations created for the occasion. The drawings are presented here in a large format in a beautiful hardcover edition.
