A sought-after title, scarce, even in France.
Cinema 1 was reprinted in the US in paperback as "Cinema".
Cinema 2 was never reprinted in the US.
"The great illustrator and comic artist André-François Barbe (1936-2014), among conventional comics and illustrations, also developed a highly distinctive mixture of psychedelic comic, movie and flip book. Those two-pagers (which were later collected into several albums appropriately entitled 'cinema') are divided into vertical columns of panels, to be quickly read from top to bottom, evoking the idea of a film storyboard. They center around erotic daydreams, with graphic elements constantly fluctuating/transforming between the female body and the landscape."
Barbe's first illustrations were published in 1958 in Le Rire. After that, he worked for several French magazines, including Charlie Mensuel, Hara-Kiri, l'Écho des Savanes and Le Monde. Besides his work for the French market, Barbe worked for foreign magazines like Punch and Playboy. In addition to his comic career, Barbe created many illustrations for the press.
