Author, sculptor, heretic. Stanislav Szukalski was born in Poland in 1893. During his tumultuous artistic career, he was involved in the Chicago renaissance movement, only to return to Warsaw to see his entire life's work lost during WWII.
This book contains an in-depth overview of Szukalski's work. It centers around portraits both drawn and sculpted. Operatic in concept and monumental in execution, the portraits range from sensitive depictions of friends through symbolic works to biting caricatures of public figures whom Szukalski believed to be descended from an anti-human race existing alongside humanity.
The plates are accompanied by the artist's testy commentaries offering background to and explanations of the images.
