Nick Cardy was with the 3rd Armored Division and kept a sketchbook from training in Florida, battle in Belgium and Germany, to post V-E Day duty in Paris. The sketches in pencil, ink, or watercolor are incredibly evocative. Part Ashcan School, part Band of Brothers. There is also a section of photos Nick took at the front. Includes a DVD of interviews with the artist.

From the back cover: "Renowned commercial artist, designer, and sequential illustrator from DC Comic's golden days, Nick Cardy now in his 90's, has been drawing his whole life. And thank goodness for that, as these recently unearthed sketches contribute...to our history.

"Before beginning his career in comics post World War II, Nick was one of our young men shipped overseas to take part in the 'war to end all wars.'

"Without benefit of a camera, Nick proceeded to do what he did best- carrying a sketchbook and documenting his time in the conflict from beginning to end. The humor and the horror. What we have in the end, is a chronicle, one man's journey, that speaks for millions. Each sketch and painting accompanied by Nick Cardy's own commentary. A must have for fans of comic art and history both, as we hear it , and see it, first hand from an artistic legend." . Introduction by Larry Hama.
