For Leyendecker collectors, an exceedingly rare and very early work by J.C. Leyendecker (1874-1951). At the age of 19, he was given his first commercial commission: 60 illustrations for an edition of The Bible published by the Powers Brothers Company in 1894.
This item, The Royal Scroll, was published by Powers, Higley and Company, in 1900, and includes all 60 Leyendecker illustrations for the previous publication. There are also numerous other color illustrations by other artists, but it's J.C.L. that is important here!
The Royal Scroll is a 17 x 16 x 2 inch clothbound box which opens up to reveal a large scroll on top and a smaller scroll below. The cover folds down to form a bookstand and on the cover is mounted a book which can be referred to while viewing the scrolls.
Miraculously, this item from 1900 is complete and in working order! The turning key is included. The two scrolls both function and the latch holding the cover functions.
