Edward Julius Detmold was one of an extraordinary pair of twins born to an electrical engineer in London in 1883. Both brothers early entered - and won - competitions in drawing and painting. Both were exhibited in the Royal Institute at the incredible age of thirteen. The brothers continued to be as close as twins traditionally are, even working together on many etchings and paintings. Their careers continued to parallel one another's until the tragic and inexplicable death of Maurice Detmold by suicide. Edward Julius continued to paint - the strength and maturity of his work increased steadily and for ten years he experienced a great flowering of his talent. The witness to his talent and to that of his brother remains, however - in exquisite coloration of scenes created for tiny creatures, in richly imaginative conceptions, in exotic and sensuous paintings.
