La ville est non seulement inondée, mais toutes sortes de malfrats et de crapules de la pire espèce déboulent de toutes parts, prêts à tout pour s'approprier cet or. Parmi eux, un groupe de voleurs aussi malins qu'impitoyables, ont mis en place un ingénieux projet de cambriolage pour s'emparer du butin. Quand le colonel Carter arrive avec ses hommes pour sécuriser l'or, le maire espère un retour au calme mais la situation dégénère lorsque les lingots se volatilisent comme par magie. Pourtant, le coffre-fort vidé est intact ! La tension est à son comble. Dans une ville où la foule se délecte des procès expéditifs et des lynchages, les victimes collatérales seront nombreuses et les apparences souvent trompeuses.
